I think Duterte just fed the media intrigue
and they ate the bait. Watch the video above.
Knowing that the media & his critics are like hungry dogs who will bite at anything he says, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte apparently seemed to throw a bone (bait) they could feast on.
In this video, Duterte starts by asking "... a few questions as always? So we can generate news and intrigue, and all, but this time..." then proceeds to tell the story about talking to God. Then after he told the story, Duterte cracks a joke by saying (rough translation about the context of the joke) "don't clap too much because my promise might be broken."
After he told the story, media focused on it instead of what was discussed between him and the current Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe.
Whether you realized it or not, Duterte just created an intrigue. The story about him talking to GOD was the bone he threw to the hungry media and critics so they could feast on garbage.
Why would Duterte do that? Was it a diversion and was he just being mischievous with the media?
There are many possibilities and we can all speculate. Maybe his purpose was simply to create a state of constant crisis so that polarized forces remain strongly aligned to him. Intrigue like this brings him closer to the masses. Duterte has to be constantly talked about so that his presence is felt nationwide.
To be talked about, we have to remember that the masses are not interested in what he discussed with the Abe. The masses want to be entertained by Duterte and Duterte knows that. This is a bit like showbiz, and when the elite starts talking about Duterte being crazy because he is imagined he talked to GOD, his supporters came to his defense thus strengthening the support
Aside from that, if this really becomes a big issue, he can always dismiss it easily. I can already imagine Duterte saying something like this, "Itong mga bobo, naniwala kaakad sa kwento. Bobo talaga eh kwento lang yun. Sino ba 'ako' na kausapin ng diyos?"
If he says that then the all his critics will instantly look stupid.
